Korean Hanbok

Besides Chinese Cheongsam, the Korean Hanbok is one of my most favourite traditional outfit :-)

I did my research and sewed it as close as possible to the traditional outfit.

Here's the outer jacket called jeogori. Materials used are 100% imported cotton and imported Taiwan sequin lace. I totally heart this sequin lace, and am beating myself up for not buying more to stash away. I tied the red ties, otkorum, the correct traditional way.
With it's dress, chima, the Korean Hanbok is complete. I used thick but cooling Chinese brocade. Chinese brocade is expensive but it provides richness to its outlook and fullness to the skirt. This brocade design is the perfect match for the Taiwan sequins on the outer jacket :-). Hope Mummy J and little Princess G love the outfit as much as I do :-).

Sorry for all the quiet.

I miss this space dearly, and would love to update more often, but was too caught up to do anything more than updating nivniv Facebook page now and then. Between Christmas to Chinese New Year is always the bussiest time of the year for nivniv Handmade. This year was especially hectic, as Christmas and CNY were just one month apart!

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to my dear customers and friends for your repeat orders. I had the pleasure of revisiting some of my current designs, and sewing them again gave me a familiar feeling of contentment :-).

I was also excited in designing some new dresses, which I can hardly wait to share with you in my future posts. Hope you will like them as much as I do :-).

Model Wannabe

Since young, my daughter QQ, loves dressing up and modeling for the camera. Recently, she had the opportunity to do so for a profile shoot (which I am not able to do share now!). I snapped alongside; these blurry shots are from my iPhone.

Here's my model wannabe posing :-)

Now she's getting quite comfortable, and doing more and more poses...Later she added some unconventional ones...Haha... here's her doing the ostrich walk. With her tongue in action :-DAnd... hahaha! I don't know what pose this is. Also with that tongue action. I find it just plain funny :-PNote:

I made this Red Modern Cheongsam for QQ for CNY celebration when she was 2.5 years old. Now that she is 4.5 years old, she is still able to wear it as a tunic.

Customized Pouches

This is a customised order from a dear childhood friend, Soo Fong :-).

Dress: Red Bow Dress

When my dear customer and friend showed me some pictures for this dress, I was immediately attracted to the big bow behind the dress. After figuring out how to sew it and having found some big polka-dots fabric, the project is a go :-). We made some changes to the original pictures, and here's the outcome :-)

Front - the straps is attached to the dress with buttons. Here's how the back looks like, with both the straps looped through and tied as a big bow at the back. Comes with a matching babushka. Available in these two colour prints - Red and Blue

Party Dress: Madison

Madison is the third party dress designed and sewn for this order.

Made of 100% cotton and organza, this dress is light and flitty. With dainty frills on the neckline and arms, followed by a skirt that is full and twirly. A detachable fluffy poppy flower adorns the neckline. This poppy clip can be removed and clipped on the hair. I especially love the back with a frilled V and bordered with 3 full poppies. This is one of the dresses that made my heart ache when I pack it up for my dear customer. This may sound wierd, but everytime I pack a dress to be sent, I always say a silent wish that the dress will be treated well and loved by the new owner. For this dress, Madison, the feeling was even more so. I literally felt a lump on my throat (seriously!)

I'm happy that the owner loves it too. Just hoping for a chance to see her wear it! :-)

Our family drove up to Cameron Highlands for a short weekend getaway, a much-needed break from the chaos and haste of everyday live. I gladly soaked in the sights, scents and sounds; grateful and surprised at some of the feelings evoked. Too mild for some, but were definitely soothing for me...

:: marveling at the diversity of beautiful blooms:: bathing the eyes with breath-taking views of rolling hills, cottony clouds and dipping valleys :: whiffing the aroma of hot tea and melt-in-the-mouth lemony butter cake... lovely!:: feeling grateful for the bond that they share :: falling in love (yet again) with my sleeping child:: feeling pretty smart with our buys :-):: savoring a comfort food of steamy Chinese steamboat on a cold rainy night:: feeling compassionate, love and frustration all at once at my sleepy, hungry, crying child... what a mixture of feelings! :: enjoying a good walk through jungle tracks, filling our lungs with fresh oxygen and setting our hearts pumping (i had to take off my dress shoes as the wet tracks were dangerously slippery!):: seeing my littlest one relishing the novelty of smooth velvety balm with a slight hint of cherry... she's going to grow into a little vainpot, no doubt :-) :: learning from my little one that the simplest request is one of the most joyful textures, scents, sights, sounds, feelings, tastes... ... all so refreshing and comforting.I'm back where I am now... recharged and excited for things to come :-).

The sun over me

My little sweetie loves singing, dancing, drawing, colouring and painting above other scholastic activities. That means, instead of picking up books, I got a whole lot of paint stains and flying colur pencil shavings to clean up :-). But this does not deter me from encouraging her to draw more, as I just couldn't get enough of her squiggles and blotches of colours :-). Here's one of my fave, a drawing of her Mama under the sun. It's amazing to note that the drawing was done horizontally, not vertically (like how it looks like now). Now perched on my shelf among my other sewing notions, it accompanies me while my sewing machine hums away during the still of nights. A true mood lifter :-).

Sling Bag: Tiles

This is a special order from Yee Ling :-). She chose a colourful print from Ikea as the main fabric, and it was paired with a sunshine yellow checkered fabric for the reversed side. I love the fabric combination - young, vibrant and fresh, just like her :-D. Featuring:

- roomy bag interior
- a reversible side
- a YKK zippered pouch and a long strap with a detachable key chain- button closure, of a big wooden button sewn on with thick nylon thread- I love the fact that it's very light but durable as all pieces are top-stitched
- and a special request of padded shoulder strap (fold the strap into half to rest comfortably on the shoulder) Except for the bottom piece (which is oval in shape), I managed to match up all the prints on all the pieces.
Not that anyone bothers, but if they don't match up, it'll drive me nuts. And will eventually unpick the stitches and sew the whole bag again.

The extra time taken to match the prints did pay off, didn't it? The finishing is much more neater and the joints can barely be seen, especially on the yellow fabric (see picture no. 2 above) :-)Thanks Yee Ling for the purchase!

Party Dress: Carrie

Carrie is the second party dress designed and sewn in this order.

When I was designing Carrie, I pictured a little girl in flared twirly skirt running across a field of wispy yellow flowers. With a flower ring on her hair. Barefooted and carefree. That's where I put in the tiered twirly skirt and a pair of three quarter length sleeves.
As the purpose of this dress is to be worn as a party dress, I injected some sophistication and a modern touch to it as well. That's where the sequins came in at the bodice.I would say, this dress is Bohemian with a modern touch :-).

Instead of floral fabric, I chose a solid strawberry pink that is both sweet and modern. I also modified the flared sleeves by adding sophisticated princessy puffs that gently flares down the arms. The dress is completed with a matching hairband. The light fluffy flower petals lend a carefree touch, but the single flower (instead of a row of flowers) and the faux pearl are definitely modern. Package with a message

This is a recent order from an online friend; summer dresses at sizes 4T and 2T. This blue patchwork dress was meant as a gift for her friend's daughter, and so I equipped the package with her message before posting. This piccie was taken at the post office :-). If it were for an older recipient, I would have opted for more neutral decoration on the side... probably some dried wild flowers or felt flowers in muted shades. And include some twines as well. But this package is meant for a 2 year old little girl, so I reckon little hearts of pink and red would be more appreciated :-).

My daughter's birthday dress

My sweet daughter, QQ turned 4 last fortnight on a Wednesday. Like every other year, I sew a birthday dress/ outfit for her. I would like to make this a tradition every year for as long as she will wear my creations :-).

For this year birthday outfit, it has a bit more sentimental value to me... not the design, or the fabric, but it is because this dress was sewn during the interview with Nanyang Siang Pau :-). I decided to keep this dress for my little QQ, and it fits her well on her 4th birthday :-). What's more important is, QQ loves this dress too. How could she not love fluttering pink and purple butterflies, sweet white hearts on pink shoulder ties, and an eye-catching ribbon with yellow flower button. Of course, comfort does play a big role too :-).

The celebration was a simple one on an earlier weekend. It was a happy occasion inolving a certain chocolate drink named Milo Dinosaur, a huge amount of time at the bookshop, and a lovely lunch of pancakes and ice cream. It's not often the kids get to eat ice-cream for lunch, but since it's the Princess' wish on her birthday, we obliged. After all, one only gets to celebrate his/ her birthday once a year :-D. And oh, she did enjoyed a few rounds on the mini carousal, while big brother HQ snapped these piccies: The celebration ended with birthday songs and cake cutting with the grandparents on her actual birthday. Here's my happy gal posing with her cake, in her pajamas :-). A simple yet happy celebration with the family. Happy birthday, sweet QQ. May you grow up healthy, strong and happy. We all love you very very much! :-D.

Party dress: Olivia (with sequins)

When I was commissioned to design and sew a party dress for a dear customer, I begun sketching and came up with 3 original nivniv designs for her to choose from. She loves them, and placed an order for all 3. I was indeed grateful, and very excited :-).

I will share with you the process for all 3 dresses, one at a time. Here's the outcome of the first dress - Olivia. I love the soft premium quality fabric in the loveliest shade of olive (customer's choice), the cut of the dress, the puffed and buttoned sleeves, the sequined yoke, and the frill at the bottom of the skirt. I seriously dig at how the dress turns out :-).Sequins is such a beautiful medium to work with... it's very fiddly and lots of hardwork, but boy the result was really worth it! The sparkles are mesmerizing, and the overall look of the finished product was amazing :-DThis is my first time making sleeves with buttons and arm bands, and I found that the stitching needs to be very precise. I drafted the sleeves based on my observation of my own work blouse sleeves, and am really pleased with how they turned out :-). Comes with matching sequined hairband. Brooch & Hairclips Set

These brooch and hairclips set were made with mummies and princesses (daughters) in mind :-). (This is my past project, which I have yet to upload :-)).

You can wear the brooch on your top/ dress, on your bag, on a scarf, on a scrunchie to be worn on your hair or wrist, or anywhere you fancy :-). If you have a little princess, she can wear the hairclips while mummy wears the brooch for a matchy mummy-and-princess (daughter) look :-).

Summer Dresses: 3 in 1

After the craft fair, I admit that I needed a few days to get things rolling again. Amidst sewing to fulfill past orders, I decided that it'll be nice to step away a bit from the sewing machine, and visit my this little blogspace again :-). I have a few projects pending for update from the craft fair. Just done the post on Avocado Bag yesterday. And today, I'll do an update on Summer Dresses :-).

Ok, so I'm really bad at giving names to my creations... haha! But really this Summer Dress is as versatile as its name. You get 3 different styles with 1 dress!

You can wear it like a normal summer dress with ties on both shoulders: Or as a halter dress... by tucking the back straps into the dress, the two front straps can be tied as a halter around the neck (front & back): Or wear it as a long skirt! I love that the detachable matching brooch gives the outfit a little more flare when it's pinned on the top. This versatile little summer dress can also be worn as a layering piece with long sleeves and leggings under it.

As your little princess grows, the stretchable bodice allows the dress can be worn as a long top with leggings/ stretch pants, or as a shorter skirt with a top. It's truly a grow-on-me dress!

So with all the ideas above, it looks like it has more than 3 styles, really :-). I bet you can think of more ways to wear it. Now, I'm just looking for some time to squeeze in an adult version for me :-D.

Avocado Bag: The Variations

Avocado Bag made its debut at a recent craft market.

I really love how they turned out... the shape, the fabric combination, and of course the sweet details on the button loop and nivniv tag at the side :-). I made 3 variations altogether.Chocolate was the first that I made...Strawbies, which was the second design, was slightly different. I love how the prints go so well together, and the button was really too cute :-). And here's the third bag - Dusty Pink, in the loveliest shade of pink. It was the last bag that I made and I only got to take its photo at the craft market itself before it was snapped up. Measurements:

Pipit Wonderful Market

Last Saturday, I set up my very first craft booth at Pipit Wonderful Market... and it was indeed wonderful :-).

Despite feeling whoozy from sleepless nights for the past few days, I was really excited that day. And when I sold a dress only 20 minutes from when the market was open to the crowd, I was over the moon with happiness :-D.Was I glad that I had Hubs with me throughout the event, cracking jokes and lending a much needed helping hand :-). My admiration for Beanipet for her sweet demenour and cute pillows, Evangelione for her bewitching and charming dolls, hoyoyi for her neat sewing, yisin for her innocent and beautiful drawings, and of course many others handmade artists which I have yet to discover :-).

Running a booth at a craft fair is nothing like running an online store. First and foremost, being physically surrounded by so many of the same kind (handmade people!) made me feel I'm not alone in this crafty journey. It reaffirms me of my dreams and of what I want to do. For this, I'm really glad :-)

Secondly, correspondence with customers was done face to face from start to finish, and it was truly refreshing seeing their responses to nivniv :-).the above picture is courtesy by Jacqueline.

I hope the little girls being new owners of nivniv dresses, are now skipping in delight :-). Owners of this bag and this bag will love them as much as I do. And my hope for mothers to be happy with their Mother's Day brooches :-).

Mother's Day Special

nivniv will be at Pipit WM6 this Saturday. In conjunction to Mother's Day, which falls on the next day, nivniv will be having a Mother's Day Special :-).

Avocado Bag

Avocado is one of my favourite fruits. It's rich, creamy and nutritious. To me, it's the next best thing to durian :-).

I find it's shape unique and so I thought why not I replicate its shape into a bag?

Drafting the pattern is always the most tedious and trying part of coming up with a new product :-). I took a shortcut *wink*, by taking the pattern for this bag, ballooned it by 260%, and redrafted the handle. Here's the outcome... naturally, I named it Avocado Bag :-).
It's lined with a matching fabric, and comes with many pockets inside - for pens, tissue, handphone and a notepad/ thin book :-).

This Chocolate variety (and a few other designs) will be made available during Pipit Wonderful Market 6. Details of the event as below:

Summer Dress: Spring Fling

This dress is so light, airy and comfortable that your little princess may not want to take it off :-). It's easy to put on too - just pull the dress over the head and arms; no buttons, ties or zippers to fumble with.

The fabric of this dress is one of my most loved fabric :-). It has fun cute prints of little birds, rabbits and ladybirds on it, which I think little girls will love. The overall pastel colour also makes the fabric looks so very happy :-).

I really love how sweet this dress turned out to be... especially the ruffles on the neckline and the two straps on the shoulders. A small lovely bow was added too to complete the look :-). Comes with a matching babushka.

These dresses are orders for little girls at the age of 18 months old.

They're so little they look like dolls' dresses! I love sewing mini dresses like these simply because they're really too cute! All the dresses above come with matching hairclips or babushka, and I can't help smiling to myself imagining how cute those 18-month olds will look in them :-). Wish my daughter is as little so that I can sew mini dresses for her too :-D.

The Year of the Bunny is just around the corner, and I would like to wish everyone a happy, prosperous, and healthy bunny year :-D.

For CNY pre-orders, the last parcel was hand-delivered this morning. I have initially closed CNY pre-order on the 21st Dec 2010 so to make sure that I can deliver all orders by 20th Jan 2011. Due to rush orders for the festivity and some unforeseen event (my granny underwent a surgery recently after a fall from a staircase :-( ), I was 8 days overdue from my initial target of 20th Jan 2011. Please accept my sincere apologies for the delay.

Yes, to ensure the correct fit, I made a box according to the owner's camera measurements from recycled card paper :-).

The camera pouch is padded for protection, and closes with velcro. There's a small insert for extra SD card and a hole to pull the strap through.

Safe Arrival

There's quite a number of items on nivniv that is 3D that require extra careful packaging. This is especially true when these items are shipped via post. Anything that is carefully handsewn in the best condition may end up looking like they came out from the dumpsite, if not packaged carefully.

That is why I take great lengths in ensuring that all nivniv items heading to the owners is packaged carefully.

I use bubble packaging for all my hairclips, double layers for the Rose Hairclips.

And recently, when I launched the Whee Dress, I found that bubble packaging just don't work for the hairband. It is an odd shape that no matter how I wrap it with the bubble packaging, the fuchsia flower may just get crushed and the shape misshapen.

In order to retain the shape of the fuchsia flower on the hairband, I reasoned I must use a box.

Here's one order that I recently sent to a customer. After carefully lining all the items ordered in the box, I covered the box with plastic. Look... I can even fit in a Gift Voucher at the side! Thank you so much for your order, dear, you know who you are :-).

Sundress: Sunshine Roses

I was excited when I received an order for 2 similar dresses meant for 2 sisters. It always warms my heart seeing siblings playing toegther wearing similar dresses :-).

This order came from Shireen Loh, for her beautiful angels, Ash and Em :-). She had wanted a pair of sundresses made from creamy yellow base fabric. After seeing some choices that I emailed to her, she choosed the fabric choices you see below:

I learned a valuable lesson making these dresses. I found out the hard way, that took a lot more time and effort, but I'm glad with how everything turned out in the end :-).

I initially sew the dresses with the straps, yokes and bottom frills in the mint green polkadots fabric. The outcome of the dress was disastrous. Due to the light and dainty prints on the main creamy yellow fabric, one could only see the mint green polkadot. The creamy yellow section of the dress seemed to be over-powered and "swallowed". It became "invisible".

So I undid the dress and redesign the straps, yokes and bottom frills. And I replace them with the main creamy yellow fabric (luckily I bought extra!). The mint green fabric is used as an accent to brighten up the dress, and that did not overpower the creamy yellow fabric. I really love how they finally turn out! The details:
- fine pleats on the bodice in mint green
- bows and yoyos on the straps
- detachable brooches Here's the micro shot of the detachable brooch. One for each dress. These detachable brooches are 100% handsewn with needle and threads. The back of the dresses... mint green pleats and buttons as closure. Each dress comes with a matching babushka/ bandana to tie at the nape of the neck. These are on the way to their owners now. I hope Shireen and her angels will love what they see in the package :-).

My friend, Michelle, asked me to make 2 items for 2 new mummies. I had never sewn these before,and the sample that Michelle showed me was a good basic guide. I had some thoughts about them, did some modifications, and came out with these: Just for fun, I posted this picture on FB as well as on this blog, for readers to guess what these are. And I must say you girls are very creative with your answers! Thank you to everyone for taking part! Some are partially correct... and yes, we also have a winner with her correct answers!

These are nursing covers :-) Use it by putting it over both shoulders and button up in front or on one side of the shoulders. I made them reversible, so the mummies can choose to use either the floral side the solid side!

Michellewas so nice to help me get a picture of her friend in the nursing cover. (no baby in the picture :-)) These nursing covers have 2 rows of beautiful 100% cotton laces on both ends. Once the mummies are done with nursing, these nursing covers are pretty to double up as:
- baby blanket (a great baby blankie for our Malaysia wheather! Use as it is or fold once for more warmth)
- changing mat
- stroller cover
- playmat on soft grass or beach
- or even a shawl for mummies!

Based on the entries to this little riddle:
- Jessyn Tai guessed "baby blanket" which is close, but not entirely correct. So... she wins a RM5 cash voucher.

- Barbara Ng guessed "1. something to cover the stroller, 2. something for mother during breastfeeding.". Both answers are correct! And so, she wins a RM20 cash voucher!

"Wheee!!!" Dress: Fuchsia

Thanks to Elaine, this dress now has a name. A "Wheee!!!" Dress :-).

It's essentially a circle dress :-). With a full skirt, great for swirling, great for going "wheeeeeee!!!". A great dinner dress, party dress, dance dress, or simply a dress a princess will adore. My little princess does adore this dress, as you can see from the pictures here :-).
I've sewed fuchsia trimmings at the edge of the skirt, for a playful touch and volume. Looks striking too! Look at the beautiful layers. This dress comes with a matching hairband, adorned by an adorable fuchsia flower. Code: GD0006

Barb's Review: BowWow Knapsack

Sometime ago, I learned that Barb's princess, Ashley, was hospitalised for a surgery to remove abscess from her knee. Reading her blog entries on how Ashley got to endure the dressing every day during her hospital stay reminded me of my little QQ when she was hospitalised at 1 year + for pneumonia and bronchitis .

And so we decided to give something to Ashley to cheer her up :-). I got to know that Ashley is very into dogs at the moment, so we presented her a BowWow Knapsack. Party Dress: Puffy Red

I made this dress for my daughter to wear for my brother's wedding recently.

I love this fabric that I had in my stash. It is 100% premium cotton and feels very rich to the touch. Very soft and comfortable too.

The bodice of the dress is gathered at the neckline and sleeves, creating princess sleeves. A white polkadot and black band adorns the waist before it billows to a puffy skirt :-). I added a tutu below her skirt, which made the skirt even puffier. She seriously looked so cute in it :-D.

I'm sorry this dress will not be available for sale at the moment. Should you like the design of this dress, please feel free to drop me a line, and I'll see to restock the red fabric, or to suggest another fabric.

I will email to you with payment details. Please make payment within 3 days and email to me to alert me.

International Buyers:
Payment can be made through Paypal. Delivery charges and delivery date will be advised once confirmed.
